My name is Paul Kipp, an aspiring game designer currently studying at American University in Washington D.C. I intend to complete an MA in Game Design in the Spring of 2025. I have already completed my BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I enjoy playing almost any type of game; video games, board games, or classic table top role playing games (TTRPGs). I also enjoy learning more about how games are designed and how their systems are built. Whether it be admiring how Ultrahand was created for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, or exploring new ways to make a JRPG in Octopath Traveler, there is always something that is fascinating about game design itself. In TTRPGs, I enjoy collaboratively telling a story with my fellow players or even running a campaign myself, taking inspiration from media of all kinds to write my own worlds.
Starting in my undergraduate and continuing on through my graduate programs, I have completed several projects. Collectively, they have let me dive into rapid and iterative prototyping, tying together complicated and interrelated systems, and documenting my methodologies. Many of these skills can translate directly into designing video games and their systems. Indeed, I have used them to create video game prototypes as I continue my education. Nevertheless, my computer engineering projects still have merits as testaments to working in a team to complete a daunting project.
